(広島平和記念公園) Hiroshima Peace Park

The most somber experience that hopefully no other place would have to have. It shows resilience, yes, but this is resilience they shouldn't have had to show.

Either way, this is just a short note on my visit to Hiroshima Peace Park, while here's the note of my visit to the one in Nagasaki

Budget: JPY8,000 (~USD76)
  • JPY8,000. Roundtrip bus, allocated using Willer Bus Pass (JPY4,000 one way)
Visit Date
  • May 18-19, 2019
  • We did this hike as part of a Hiroshima Weekend, where we spent the Saturday morning visiting Hiroshima Peace Park, Saturday afternoon looking at Itsukushima Shrine's iconic torii, and Sunday doing Mt. Misen hike.

When to Go
Anytime during the year.

Special Notes
  • Our first stop was ground zero, which is just a small plaque.
  • Next was walking around the park, and then going to the museum. I highly recommend taking the hour or two in the museum, to appreciate the history and understand what really happened, on the perspective of those who had their lives upended in a split second.
Itinerary
Friday
  • Took the bus from Tokyo to Hiroshima.
Saturday
  • AM: Explored the Hiroshima Peace Park, lunch near the station eating Hiroshima style okonomiyaki
  • PM: Itsukushima Shrine. (covered in another blog post)
Sunday
  • AM: Mt. Misen hike. (covered in another blog post)
  • PM: Travelled back to Hiroshima City, took the bus back to Tokyo.
Monday
  • AM: Back to Tokyo, ran straight to work!

The most posh bus EVER. We had our own rooms. ROOMS!

Each room had a lazy boy style chair that is almost fully reclining, slippers, water, basically like a flight.

Our first stop: Ground Zero.

This was it. A small plaque.

The few surviving building. Or maybe the only one?

Atomic Bomb Dome.

Near the museum.

There are plenty of these in the museums, and it was painful to read and very, very, emotionally exhausting.

The Atomic Bomb Dome at night.

Across the park.
