(厳島神社) Itsukushima Shrine

One of the most iconic places in Japan, probably second only to Mt. Fuji, this shrine definitely delivered on the magical factor. Worth taking a bus all the way from Tokyo just to stare at it for hours. Which we did.

Budget: JPY1,200 (~USD12) from Hiroshima City
  • JPY840. Train, Hiroshima < > Miyamaguchi Station (JPY420 one way)
  • JPY360. Ferry, Miyamaguchi < > Miyajima port (JPY180 one way)
Visit Date
  • May 18-19, 2019
  • We did this hike as part of a Hiroshima Weekend, where we spent the Saturday morning visiting Hiroshima Peace Park, Saturday afternoon looking at Itsukushima Shrine's iconic torii, and Sunday doing Mt. Misen hike.
When to Go
Anytime during the year, but definitely go at dusk~night. Else the torii wouldn't be submerged in water.

    Itinerary
    • Public transportation is easy, so itinerary can be adjusted as needed. It can be as short as 10 minutes, or a couple of hours.

    Our first peek.

The shrine that requires JPY500 to enter.

We sat in one of the benches and waited for it to get dark.

    The view magically changed.

    Our waiting spot.

There are boats that pass through the torii. Yes, right in the middle. And circles it too.

At high tide, the shrine gets surrounded by water. When we went, there was a concert happening too.

The next day, while the high tide hasn't come in yet, people flock to the torii.

Looking back at the shrine. Yes, it is that crowded.

There's also quite a lot of people searching for oysters. I think.

A close up of the magnificent torii.
